“What happened to make one as young and lovely as you so jaded?”
She lifted one shoulder and let it fall.
“Have you ever experienced love?” the stranger asked softly. “Not the physical variety. Obviously, you have, as one of the Flowers.”
“Have you?” she countered.
“I asked you first.”
“What are you waiting for? True love?”
She laughed.
“No.” Annalise shook her head. “I don’t believe in it.” Not after the way she’d seen people pretend to care for one another in service to a transaction here at the House of Virtue, either. She gestured at the window. “That’s not real. They’re both playing a part to get their needs met. His needs are physical. Hers are monetary. I don’t see how that’s so different from a marriage contract, either.”
“So cynical,” the stranger mused, and Annalise thought she detected a note of wistfulness in his tone.
“But there’s no denying it looks enjoyable,” she added, veering away from his pity, “and I would like to try being kissed properly.”
“Define ‘properly.’”
“Perhaps I mean improperly,” she said breathlessly. Awareness skittered down her skin like a thousand spiders. Whether handsome or not, this man had presence. His voice alone rumbled through her, each syllable an invisible caress. She imagined him with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. He was taller than she, that much she could tell from the dim light filtering through the peep-through glass.
She briefly imagined it was Wilder, then resolutely pushed that notion away. He was incapable of carrying on a civil conversation—at least, with her. That man would have immediately taken the opportunity to needle her.
He certainly wouldn’t have mistaken her for a true Flower.
“I’m guessing you’ve been kissed improperly every day, but never had the real thing,” he said questioningly.
Perhaps. There had been the quick press of a boy’s lips to her cheek one Christmas beneath the mistletoe at her aunt’s. Apart from that, she truly was innocent in this regard.
And how she wished not to be.
“Define ‘properly’ for me,” she said through a closed throat. “What does it mean, to you?”
“To be kissed by a man who wants you for more than your face and form. The kind of kiss that makes promises from the heart.”
Her pulse quickened. Yes, she would like to be kissed like that, very much. Not that she would admit it.
“Promises it can’t keep,” Annalise scoffed.
“Perhaps not.” There was bemusement in the man’s voice. “It doesn’t mean the heart doesn’t wish to keep them.”

If you enjoy obsessive, possessive heroes who will stop at nothing to win over their women, then you will enjoy the Virtue & Vice series!
