She surveyed the books scattered around on the floor with dismay. “I must apologize; I only meant to look for a volume of poetry for next week’s lessons. I’m afraid I lost myself.”
“Then it’s a lucky thing I was here to find you.”
He took her chin gently between his thumb and forefinger, tipping her face upward. All the breath whooshed out of Rosalyn’s lungs. Her eyes fluttered closed.
Yes, yes, yes.
Oh, no, no, no. Rosalyn’s eyes snapped open. She gasped and whirled away.
“Is everything alright?” he asked. “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
“You don’t. I mean, you didn’t.” Her thoughts were like a basket of kittens, all meowing and crawling over one another to get out, forcing her to chase after them.
He was an earl. She was his temporary employee. Rosalyn’s opinion of men who seduced their employees ranked on par with dirt on the sole of her shoe. Her opinion of women who flagrantly kissed men without regard to propriety ranked somewhere below that.
And yet, her opinion of him was higher than any other man in existence.
She was not like those women at the House of Virtue, pretending to be reforming their ways while engaging in brazenly scandalous activities. Therefore, she must keep her lips to herself.
But oh, how desperately she did not want to.
